Most engineering programs focus on standard “engineering science” courses, such as statics, thermodynamics, and circuits, cutting back on hands-on engineering design. I believe it’s high time we moved away from a technocentric approach and adopt a sociotechnical mindset and trainee engineers.
By this I mean we need to start thinking about the ways in which the social and technical are always connected. These aspects should not be separated, with technical challenges going to the engineers and social challenges going to the sociologists. How do we put our classroom-acquired knowledge as engineers to work to solve social problems? Sociotechnical thinking is the capacity to identify this relationship and to solve problems with this relationship in mind.
And now to the Student Engineer. Enough of the blame game. If our educational system isn’t pushing us enough, what are we doing personally besides classroom work to put ourselves out there?
That’s food for thought. There’s so much more we can do for Ghana, for Africa, and the world at large.
Hᴀᴠᴇ ᴍᴇɴᴛᴏʀꜱ. Rᴇᴀᴅ ʙᴏᴏᴋꜱ. Rᴇᴀᴄʜ ᴏᴜᴛ. Aꜱᴋ Qᴜᴇꜱᴛɪᴏɴꜱ. An Engineer is a problem solver. It’s high time we started tackling our problems here. Now is the time to ‘Build Back Wiser.’
